Photographing an Older Newborn:  Capturing 2-Month-Old Nash’s Milestones

Newborn photography is often associated with the first two weeks of a baby’s life, but photographing an older newborn—like sweet Nash, who was around two months old for his session—can offer the unique experience of a newborn and milestone session in one.  At this time, babies start showing more personality and expression, and Nash was no exception!  Throughout the session, he was awake most of the time, giving me plenty of opportunities to capture his beautiful dark eyes and various expressions.  He even smiled often, which made for some precious shots.

Older newborns are also typically more interactive.  They may not sleep as deeply as younger newborns, but they make up for it with curious looks, alertness, and in Nash’s case, adorable smiles.

• Incorporate Milestone Poses: Since Nash’s session was a combination of a traditional wrapped newborn session and a milestone session, I was able to document not only wrapped poses, but also his developing motor skills and expressions. At two months, babies can follow movements with their eyes, which can create some precious alert photos.
• Plan for Shorter Sleep Periods: While older newborns don’t sleep as deeply as younger ones, Nash took a very brief nap during the session, allowing me to capture a few peaceful sleeping shots.
