Wedding Wednesday – Why Do You Need a 2nd Photographer?

As a wedding photographer, I have had the privilege of capturing countless weddings over the last 15 years. One thing that I have learned is that having two photographers at your wedding can be a game-changer and I’ve been so fortunate to work alongside my sister Amanda for almost as long as I’ve been shooting weddings.  It’s been several years since I’ve done a post about second photographers so in honor of my sister’s 40th birthday this weekend (and yes, we are shooting a wedding), I thought I’d sing the praises of why I think she is so important to a wedding day!

Here are just a few of the benefits that come with having a second shooter on your big day.

  1. More Coverage

One of the most significant benefits of having two photographers is that you will get more coverage of your wedding. With two photographers, you can capture multiple angles and perspectives simultaneously, which means you won’t miss a single moment of your special day. While one photographer is capturing the bride getting ready with her girls, the other one is with the groom and his guys.  When one of us is capturing formal photos, the other is grabbing candid photos in between poses.

  1. More Creativity

Another benefit of having two photographers is that you will have more creativity in your photos. With two photographers, you can experiment with different lighting, angles, and poses, which can result in some truly unique shots. This also allows for more dynamic storytelling of your wedding day.

  1. Less Stress

Having two photographers can also help to reduce stress on your wedding day. With more coverage and creativity, you can rest assured that every moment is being captured. This means you can relax and enjoy your day without worrying about whether or not the photographer is getting the shots you want.  If one of us is eating, the other is making the rounds at the reception, making sure we don’t miss a thing!

  1. Different Perspectives

With two photographers, you also get the benefit of different perspectives. While one photographer is focusing on the bride and groom, the other can be capturing the details of the decor or candid moments between guests. This adds depth and dimension to your photos and tells a more complete story of your wedding day.  During events such as the first dance, we shoot with different lenses so you’ll not only have different perspectives but also close-up and pulled-back photos.

And what about the benefits of Amanda, specifically?   First, my couples can rest assured that no matter what, they are getting a consistent experience.  Even in the rare times that I have to find someone to replace her, I still make sure that it is someone with not only a similar style but also the same values when it comes to wedding photography.

  1. Seamless Collaboration

Because Amanda and I have been working together for a while (and have known each other our whole lives), we have a strong understanding of each other’s strengths and weaknesses. We communicate seamlessly and anticipate each other’s needs, which results in a more cohesive and efficient workflow. This means we can capture more moments in less time and create a more cohesive final product.

  1. Consistent Style

With an established team, you can expect a consistent style throughout your wedding photos. We have a similar approach to lighting, posing, and editing, which will ensure that your photos have a cohesive look and feel. This is especially important if you plan to create a wedding album or print large canvases to display in your home.

3. Trust and Comfort

Amanda and I trust each other and are comfortable working together, knowing we have each others’ backs.   You can rest assured that we are relaxed and not stressed which should help make you more relaxed, knowing you can trust us to capture your day and not miss a moment!

In conclusion, having two photographers at your wedding is a smart investment that can pay off in many ways.  These are just some of the reasons I include a second photographer in my wedding pricing.  From more coverage and creativity to less stress and different perspectives, having a second shooter can result in stunning photos that you will cherish for a lifetime.
